www.awp.faa.gov/flightstandards

We have done something for you our customers that I am really proud of. It's our flight standards home page on the Internet, www.awp.faa.gov/flightstandards. This one address acts like a magical gate that leads to the Land of Aviation Oz. Once you are on this page, any time your cursor becomes a little hand, you can click and "grab" more information about that subject.

The page is designed to download quickly and be truly user friendly. Some of the Non FAA Sites available are the Avweb, NASA, Weather, NTSB Accident Synopses, and Business and Commercial Aviation.

The Avweb has interesting Aviation/Aerospace job listings and Aviation Week articles. Under the Aviation Safety Link, I found a list of acronyms, HIRL being one of my favorites. The NTSB link got me to the synopsis of an accident in Kernville some time back where a Piper crashed due to a stripped brake fitting. The complete text of that report or any other I wanted was also available.

The FAA section really makes it easy to keep up with the latest official information. The FARs are there in full. I found procedures to test metal fatigue in Part 23, the manual and installation requirements for new propellers in Part 35, and reviewed Flight Instructor Limitations and Qualifications, Part 61.195. If needed, an 8710 form could be downloaded too.

It’s possible to get a list of all the Aviation Medical Examiners in any area with name, address and phone number. That site answered frequently asked questions (FAQs,) from when to renew a medical to a discussion of LASIK, laser eye surgery.

I was able to check out the safety seminars in California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii or click on my local Flight Standards District Office (FSDO,) and choose any of the meetings in my area.

When you decide on the seminars you want to attend, you can register using the on screen instructions. By registering, you will be letting us know how many people to plan for and in cases where seating is limited, you’ll be reserving your place.

This Aviation Safety Seminar Meeting List can be updated daily. If a change occurs to a seminar you have registered for, we will notify you immediately by e-mail.

Perhaps the best part for me is the comments section. This one-stop web page has a feedback link. I wrote to say thank you to Kevin Clover, our Regional Safety Program Manager and the other web wizards that have made this available.

Mayday, Mayday!

May I, 1999

Anyone out there who loves to fly? How about you love to fly and really enjoy sharing that experience with others? What if the ones you want to share flying with find it uncomfortable at best or frightening at worst?

Fear of flying is not that uncommon in our loved ones. Here is a solution for them and for you. The Ninety-Nines, the organization of women pilots, sponsors a "pitch hitter" course. It’s specifically designed for the non-pilot flying companion. Much of what is thought of as fear can be transformed to excitement through knowledge. Here’s where the Flying Companions course creates the difference.

Great professional pilots and instructors spend the day from 8:00 am until 4:00 PM giving lively and absorbing instruction in:

Basic Aerodynamics
Using the Radio, Reading Instruments
Beginning Navigation
Emergency Procedures.

Chances for survival of the occupants in an airplane with an incapacitated pilot are greatly increased by the preparedness of the non-pilot. The "hands on" flying experience for non-pilot participants can turn a Nervous Nellie into a competent and valuable partner.

Reserve a space for the Flying Companion Seminar, Saturday, May 1st, 8:00 - 4:00 - call Pat Prentiss at (949) 673-4099. Send your non-pilot with a plotter and an LA Terminal Chart, the rest will be provided.

Finding Fault

  • Left aileron hinge lock pin missing
  • Left fuel tank vent blocked
  • Bird’s nest on top of engine
  • Bent propeller
  • Air intake filter loose
  • Nose gear shimmy damper detached
  • Brake pad missing on right wheel
  • Underwing inspection panel screw missing, panel loose
  • Right flap roller missing (can result in jamming)
  • Elevator hinge bolt missing
  • Tail navigation light cover and bulb missing
  • Rudder offset from neutral (spring disconnected)

These 12 faults were deliberately created for a pre-flight check competition, held in England late last year. Are they items you would have noticed on a your preflight?

Here’s how the 236 contestants did: 5% found all 12 faults, 14% found 11, and 20% found 10 of the 12. On average, less than 70% of the discrepancies were found by 60% of the people.

The pilots probably did a more detailed preflight because it was a competition than they might have done, had this been a typical flight to a typical location on a typical day.
