Flying to SNA?

SNA Traffic Alert

Runway 19L
at John Wayne Airport
Closed For REPAIR
October 1, 1998
for 4-5 Weeks
Operations will be limited!

Think twice before heading to John Wayne Airport this October
Have you noticed? John Wayne Airport is having reconstructive surgery this month on Runway 19L. These major repairs are scheduled to take between four to five weeks to complete. An operation like this one impacts not only Orange County users but pilots and operators throughout the LA basin.
A Little Background: About 30 air carrier planes park overnight at SNA to be ready for the morning rush. With only 14 gates, positioning aircraft is a real challenge. Planes push back from the gates beginning at 6:45am and line up for take-off. Noise abatement procedures allow take-offs to begin at 7:00am. During that 15 minute time slot the carriers line up on Runway 19L which has never been stressed for B737s, B757s and MD80/90 types.

John Wayne Airport handles on average 85 operations per hour. The tower is open 16 hours and 45 minutes per day. Our average traffic count is 1,360 operations daily. With 19L closed, operations will be severely limited, maybe up to 60%.

What can you expect? You can you expect, delays, long delays. For the most part, pattern operations will not be possible. Students and pilots who want to practice takeoffs and landings will

find themselves exploring Long Beach, Chino, Fullerton, Compton or Torrance as alternatives.

What if you want to land at John Wayne during October? You will most likely experience delays. If you are instrument rated, current and have the appropriate equipment, be prepared to file for an approach into SNA. Also, have enough fuel and time for the wait. If IFR is not an option, consider landing somewhere else this month.

What strategies will make this challenge an adventure instead of a nightmare? Well, patience and planning are the prime ingredients. If you cannot get into Orange County within a time frame reasonable to your schedule, preplan where you will take your plane? Fullerton has some great tie-down spots and a restaurant as well. Long Beach offers several approaches, a restaurant and rental cars.

One Little Hitch If you are not familiar with your neighbors, Fullerton or Long Beach or Torrance, you may want to do a little preflight study. Each airport has its own unique features. You want to be ready. Have an airport diagram with you and be willing to ask for progressives if you are not sure exactly what air traffic wants you to do. Students, here’s the perfect time to complete your ground studies! Owners, October could be the month you polish your plane instead of flying her. You might decide to get that upgrade you’ve been thinking about but didn’t want to take time from flying to do. When you plan, know what to expect and are prepared, October will pass. With foresight, cooperation and patience, you will keep your blood pressure in the normal range and have helped all those other operators and controllers manage this situation with grace and ease.

Certified Flight Instructor &
Aviation Maintenance Technician of the Year

We’re looking for a special CFI & AMT

Do you know a CFI or AMT who deserves special

recognition? Is there a flight instructor out there who instructor out there who always goes the extra mile for his or her students? Is there a maintenance technician who you can always count on to fix it right the first time? Well, don’t keep it to yourself. Nominate that CFI or AMT for this distinguished award. Local winners go on to compete at the regional level, and if they win there, at the national level. Nominations will be accepted at the San Diego Flight Standards District Office until November 30, 1998. Nominations should consist of a brief history of the airman with emphasis on his or her contributions to the local aviation community. Nominations should focus on the airman’s contributions this past year.

Volcan Mountain

Hear the story of a CFI who’s been there.

Every year without fail at least one pilot ends his flight on the face of Volcan Mountain. This past year we were lucky and the mountain

did not claim its victim. However, there was at least one near miss. This month’s wings seminar is the actual adventure of Steven Callender, a Certified Flight Instructor for American Flyers. Steven has volunteered to tell you his story so that you can avoid making the same mistake he almost did. Steven almost ended his flight on February 23, 1998 on the face of Volcan Mountain. We are also trying to get Air Traffic Controllers to come and tell this story from their perspective.
