Where to Stay
Baja chic meets mid-century-modern SoCal at The Cape, A Thompson Hotel, where all 161 guest rooms overlook gorgeous Monuments Beach on the sparkling Sea of Cortez. After your mezcal tasting or cooking class, retreat to the hanging daybed on your private terrace for distant views of El Arco, the iconic granite arch that has become Cabo’s totem. On the Pacific side of Los Cabos, Nobu Hotel offers laid-back luxury with a focus on food and relaxation. Its decadent spa includes immersive Asian-inspired treatments and an extensive outdoor hydrotherapy garden. For a private beach resort experience, stay at Esperanza, An Auberge Resort, where indoor-outdoor casitas, family-friendly haciendas, and oceanfront villas form an idyllic community. Set within the coastal sanctuary of Puerto Los Cabos, Zadun is a short drive from Los Cabos Airport and the charming town of San José del Cabo. Every room at this Ritz-Carlton Reserve property comes with a tosoani, a dedicated point person who can arrange excursions and make reservations.
Where to Eat & Drink
The culinary scene in and around Los Cabos offers more than tacos and traditional Mexican fare. Tucked into the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, Flora Farms is a working organic farm and home to Flora’s Field Kitchen, where handmade and healthy dishes reign supreme. Another farm-to-table oasis worth seeking out is Acre, which specializes in inventive cocktails made with locally grown produce. Fausto’s Diner, one of two restaurants on the 25-acre property, boasts divine breakfast dishes like shakshuka with fresh roasted tomatoes and a scrumptious ‘breky burrito’ with charred corn salsa. Of course, you would be remiss if you visited Baja without sampling the glorious seafood sourced from its surrounding waters. Manta, the culinary centerpiece of The Cape, celebrates the cultures of the Pacific coast, taking inspiration from Mexico, Peru, Japan and beyond. The soft-shell crab taco with morita mayo is a standout, as is the raw scallop with white soy sauce and fried oyster burrito.
What to Do
Cabo San Lucas, with its lively nightlife and shopping scenes, has long been Baja’s prime tourist magnet, while San José del Cabo feels more authentically Mexican, with colorful Spanish colonial architecture and a vibrant art district with galleries featuring works by the region’s top folk artists. By contrast, the East Cape is more sparsely populated and less developed, with calm and swimmable waters in the Sea of Cortez. Experience the region’s impressive coral reef ecosystem with a snorkeling or scuba diving expedition in Cabo Pulmo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 60 miles north of Los Cabos. Outside of these protected areas and in most parts of the surrounding Pacific – where mahi-mahi, dorado, swordfish, grouper and tuna abound – deep-sea fishing is allowed. Esperanza offers fishing excursions that culminate with their culinary team preparing your fresh catch. And if you plan on golfing in Los Cabos, as many do, take note of the three championship courses designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus that roll into the desert foothills of Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club. Instruction by PGA professionals is available.
